Overall Award for Excellence
LandWorks
From its site on the Dartington Estate in Devon, LandWorks provides intensive, wraparound support, occupational training, and a strong community for people leaving prison.
The Daniel Phelan Award for Outstanding Achievement
Paul Farmer
Few people have had as much impact on public and political attitudes to mental health as Paul Farmer, winner of the 2024 Daniel Phelan Award for Outstanding Achievement. Tania Mason charts his extraordinary career.
Animals and the Environment
Naturewatch Foundation
Naturewatch Foundation (NWF) aims to end animal cruelty and advance animal welfare standards through campaigning and raising awareness. It knew there were issues when people reported barbaric wildlife crime, such as badger baiting, to the police staff who controlled response allocation.
Arts, Culture and Heritage
LUNG Productions
There is one prison suicide every three days in England and Wales, and HMP Woodhill had more than any other, with 33 people taking their lives there. LUNG Productions is a Yorkshire-based campaigning arts charity that wanted to shine a light on the problem and try to tackle it.
Campaigning and Advocacy
RNIB
When the Rail Delivery Group (RDG) unveiled in July 2023 the proposals to close all train station ticket offices in England and Glasgow, RNIB immediately recognised the detrimental impact this would have on blind and partially sighted people and their ability to travel independently on the train network.
Children and Youth
Storybook Dads
Storybook Dads makes audio and video recordings of parents in prison reading bedtime stories out loud, and sends them to their children to watch or listen to whenever they want. Approximately 300,000 children are affected by the imprisonment of a parent each year in the UK,
Disability
Contact
Contact realised that 164,000 children were missing out on their free school meals entitlement, for any one of several reasons: they may have been too ill to attend school, were waiting for a suitable school place, or could not eat the meals because of a health condition.
Education and Training
Migration Museum
The Migration Museum was set up to establish what it refers to as “Britain’s missing museum” – namely one that put Britain’s migration story at centre stage. Its team creates resources and runs workshops at its exhibition space in London, and by travelling to schools or delivering online sessions, to facilitate informed conversation around migration among children and young people.
Grantmaking and Funding
East End Community Foundation
The needs of older people in disadvantaged communities are often overlooked. This is nowhere truer than in the east end of London, where 44% of older residents of Tower Hamlets live in income-deprived households, alongside 41% in Hackney and 37% in Newham – the highest levels in the UK. Furthermore, each year £32m of the government’s Pension Credits benefit goes unclaimed.
Healthcare and Medical Research
JDRF
JDRF’s funded research and advocacy has resulted in a cutting-edge technological breakthrough for the treatment of type 1 diabetes (T1D), which is expected to transform the lives of millions of children and adults across the UK and globally over the next five years.
International Aid and Development
SolarAid
Across sub-Saharan Africa, 590 million people currently live without access to electricity; 17 million of these are in Malawi. After sunset, many households have to burn dangerous and expensive paraffin candles or kerosene lamps to provide light.
Social Care, Advice and Support
LandWorks
From its site on the Dartington Estate in Devon, LandWorks provides intensive, wraparound support, occupational training, and a strong community for people leaving prison.
